Ignacy Danielewski

Ignacy Danielewski (1907-1907), an editor of the Nadwislanin, the author of the song Wisla

He was born on 29th November 1829 in Borek Wielkopolski. In 1855 he moved to Chelmno and started cooperation with Jozef Golkowski, the editor of the Nadwislanin. On 17th September 1862 he was arrested for numerous articles against Prussian partitioners and was a prisoner in the Wisloujscie stronghold. During his imprisonment there he wrote the song Wisla which is currently the buggle call of Chelmno.
In his activity he stressed the importance of shaping national and political identity of simple people thus thwarting half a century of Germanization of the Pomerania.
In 1873 I. Danielewski moved to Torun to become the editor of the Torun Paper after 18 years of working in Chelmno.
He died there on 23rd December 1907 and was buried on the Jakubski Cemetery.
